Where will the programme be delivered?

The programme is delivered in various regions throughout New Zealand, provided that minimum learner numbers are met.

You are also able to join as part of an online group, where face-to-face sessions are facilitated via Zoom.

Entry Criteria and Requirements

  • New Zealand citizen or resident.
  • Must be able to facilitate training sessions with adult learner/s during the programme.
  • Full support from your manager, supervisor, or senior colleague.
  • Regular access to and use of a computer with reliable internet.
  • 40 credits at NCEA Level 1 including 10 literacy and 10 numeracy credits; or a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2; or equivalent workplace experience.
  • Learners who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5 in the academic band, with no individual band score lower than 5; or equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

Managers Commitment

  • Actively support and encourage your team member throughout the programme (including pre-course goal setting and assessment sign-off).
  • Allow flexibility within work hours to attend all face-to-face sessions and complete required learning activities.
  • Monitor your team members’ progress and achievement of assessments and provide additional support where necessary.

Programme Information

So that you can balance your work, family, and study commitments, the four modules of the programme are delivered over a 12-month period, part-time.

CREDITS: 40

PROGRAMME DURATION: 12 months (part-time)

TIME COMMITMENT:  NZQA guidelines suggest up to 400 hours of total study time for a 40-credit programme. This is the equivalent of approximately 9 hours study per week. Depending on your previous experience and academic achievement, this may vary to a certain degree.

GRADUATES OF THE QUALIFICATION WILL BE ABLE TO: 

  • Design learning to meet specified learning outcomes, using a range of pedagogical principles and cultural practices.
  • Use learner-centred teaching strategies that respect the mana and diverse backgrounds of adult learners.
  • Select and use facilitation and learning strategies, using resources and technologies to meet specific outcomes.
  • Use assessment, feedback, and moderation processes.
  • Seek, reflect on, and respond to feedback from learners and other stakeholders in own context to improve learner outcomes.

Programme Delivery

This programme is delivered via blended learning and a flipped-classroom model.

What is blended learning?

  • Blended learning combines both online learning and face-to-face sessions.
  • Online learning will include readings, watching videos, using interactive media, quizzes, taking part in online discussions and completing assessments.

What is a flipped classroom?

  • A flipped classroom is where learners are introduced to content (often online) prior to attending face-to-face sessions.  When attending face-to-face sessions (in person or via Zoom), this content is then put into context.

How many sessions do I attend?

  • There are four full day face-to-face sessions to attend throughout the duration of the programme.
  • The remaining hours of learning are completed online, in your own time over 12 months.

Modules | Indicative Content

MODULE 1:PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF ADULT LEARNING

This module provides learners with a fundamental understanding of contemporary and culturally appropriate pedagogical principles and practices of adult learning relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand and their own adult learning and teaching contexts. By the end of the module learners will be able to:

  1. Describe contemporary principles and practices of adult learning and in relation to own adult teaching context.
  2. Describe adult learning in terms of the Aotearoa New Zealand context and relevant underpinning frameworks.

  • Adult learning – key concepts.
  • How adults learn – principles and practices.
  • Adult learning in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Foundations for adult learning.
MODULE 2: PLAN TO FACILITATE ADULT LEARNING

This module provides learners with the ability to identify learning outcomes and select content for planning facilitated learning sessions for adult learners. By the end of the module learners will be able to:

  1. Identify learning outcomes and anticipated learner diversity for adult learning sessions to meet stakeholder requirements.
  2. Select and sequence adult learning session content to achieve identified outcomes.
  3. Plan facilitation, assessment, and review processes for adult learning sessions that meet learning outcomes, moderation requirements, and accommodates learner diversity.

mODULE 3: FACILITATE ADULT LEARNING SESSIONS

This module provides learners with the ability to prepare and facilitate learning sessions for adult learners. By the end of the module learners will be able to:

  1. Prepare for delivery of learning sessions that meet stakeholder and moderation requirements.
  2. Facilitate sessions using a range of learner-centred principles and processes.
  3. Use planned assessment methods to assess/measure learners’ achievement of learning outcomes.
  4. Review and evaluate learning sessions to reflect on and respond to learner and other stakeholder feedback.

  • Overview – facilitation of adult learning sessions.
  • Barriers to learning.
  • Learner-centred environments.
  • Facilitate learning sessions.
  • Foundations for professional practice (facilitation).
MODULE 4: REFLECTION ON PRACTICE

This module provides learners with the ability to reflect on own adult or tertiary teaching practice and identify areas for improvement. By the end of the module learners will be able to:

  1. Use a range of evaluation tools for the purpose of collecting data for reflection on own facilitation practice in accordance with organisational needs.
  2. Review own practice against moderation and stakeholder feedback, and good practice criteria, to identify areas for improvement.
  3. Develop an action plan to address identified areas for improvement of own practice.

RECORD OF PRACTICE: 40 HOUR WORK-BASED LEARNING REQUIREMENT

You must complete a minimum of 40 hours of work-based learning in an adult or tertiary teaching setting at any time over the duration of the programme. The work-based learning must include planning and facilitation for a minimum of three separate learning sessions. Evidence of these hours needs to be submitted with your final assessment.
