LEARNER PROFILE ITL3: BEAU KARA

“If I have an objective in front of me, I achieve it.”

After 12 years in the industry, Beau jumped at the opportunity to get his experience recognised: “I’ve been working since I was 15, but everything I’ve done in that time is not NZQA recognised, so I had a good think about getting my experience and expertise recognised. My boss suggested if I wanted to get career qualifications I should give it a go. It was very easy to get motivated to get into something new.”

“I am a father of four, two kids currently living with me. When I did tell them that I was going to Wintec – because I had two kids doing Wintec courses as well – they thought it was a big joke that dad was going back to Wintec but once I told them what it was for, they were quite proud.”

Beau’s facilitator Andrew recognised the experience and expertise that he brought to the course. “Beau had an especially good grasp of the business level context, looking further into the theory and application. He was switched on, demonstrated clear thinking and was able to motivate others.” Taking on the qualification has already started paying off, not just for Beau, but for his business: I’ve definitely been able to add to my organisation from what I’ve learnt – when I got the role of supervisor I was one of those who was there at the time, so I filled the gap and had to learn as I went. By joining the course that fast tracked some of that action for me.

“Rather than learning from only my own experiences, it was good to be involved in the class where people had different experiences and stories, and to learn from that.”

“It’s pretty hard not to be motivated, it’s free, you benefit from it, so why would you not?”

“Now that I’ve completed and I’ve got the qual, I feel like a big weight has been lifted.”
