LEARNER PROFILE ATT4: RANDALL MCQUEEN

“I’ve done other online courses that I’ve given up on. But this one, I didn’t. I stuck to it because I felt like it was all relevant.”

To start with, the online format took a bit to get used to, but Randall had an innovative solution – he enrolled his brother! He then had an on-hand resource to discuss and learn with: “My brother’s in the same industry. He’s not a trainer but does want to be, so I saw a bit of an opportunity, that’s why I put him on the course. This way we’re able to motivate each other and get everything completed on time. If we’re unsure about stuff, we obviously talk to each other and then we’re ready for our face to face classes.”

His industry is temporary traffic management, training for NZTA and working on the road as a site manager, and planning. NZTA have just changed the training system, and introduced a mentor role: “Now it’s changed so you do practical exercises as well. Just looking at the different learning styles, I found it was really good to get that education in while I’m getting my NZTA work, both in the classroom and out in the field.”

Randall enjoyed the materials as well as the diversity in the face to face classes: “The online learning is brilliant. Colourful and makes relevant points. To be honest, I’ve done other online courses that I’ve given up on. But this one, I didn’t. I stuck to it because I felt like it was all relevant.

There was a really broad spectrum of industries involved in our face to face classes and it’s definitely good to have that variety of adult learners in the classroom.

The discussion and approach has given me a better insight into the content I train with, and how adults think and are. I couldn’t say enough good things about the course. I did really enjoy it. At the end of the day, it’s still helping me in my life with my family, my wife and my kids. It is just a really good way to encourage them to get things done, and communicate with them.

“What a great course!”
