“I’m more aware of individual learning styles and learner capabilities now.”
Steve is delivering both theoretical and practical Electrical Engineering training from Foundation level through to Level 3. He uses an approved Learner Guide containing the basic information to meet the approved learning outcomes, but he also has some flexibility in his delivery.
Steve has been training youth and adults in an informal way through Scouting for many years. So, training as such was not new to him. But coming into the programme and being introduced to the formalities of teaching and learning, especially the variety of methods that can be incorporated, Steve described as being “quite eye-opening”.
He says, “I have a much deeper appreciation of what the learners are bringing into the course with them. I‘m more aware of their individual learning styles and individual capabilities. I found that aspect of the programme quite enlightening.
Actually, I hadn’t been with Skills Update very long when I was offered the opportunity to start the ATT4 programme. I was keen to jump straight on the first course available. It’s not something that our workplace requires us to do, but it is encouraged. To me it was a no-brainer. Obviously, when you’re training you want to be working on your skills to get the best outcomes for everyone. Not just the trainee but the trainer as well. The better we are as trainers, the better the end product is going to be.”
